Most writing about the dark web describes a vast criminal underworld. The reality of the part that is legal and useful looks very different, and far smaller. This is a live snapshot of 453 verified onion services we track, updated automatically from the Umbrixa index.
We index only sites that pass a moderation gate: privacy tools, journalism, technology, communication and research. We do not index or link marketplaces or illegal material.
It is mostly tools, not crime
The legal onion web is dominated by practical, privacy-oriented services. Roughly 77% of what we index is privacy, security, anonymous communication or technology. Journalism and whistleblowing form another substantial share. Here is the full breakdown by category.
Availability is fragile
Onion services go offline often. At the last round of checks, 78% of the services we track responded, which means roughly one in 5 is unreachable at any given moment. This churn is one reason a maintained, verified index matters: a raw list of onion links is mostly dead ends within months.
A clearnet mirror is a trust signal
48% of the services we index also publish a matching website on the ordinary web. That link to a real-world identity is one of the strongest signals that an onion service is what it claims to be. Newsrooms running SecureDrop, privacy tool makers and open-source projects almost always have one. Anonymous storefronts selling goods almost never do.
How this data is built
Every listing is discovered from a trusted reference (a vouched clearnet source, an authoritative directory such as the SecureDrop directory, or a link from a site we have already verified), then passed through an automated moderation gate that filters illegal content and thin or dead pages. Sites are scored on content, category relevance, inbound links, availability and whether they run a clearnet mirror. 63 submitted or discovered sites have been filtered out as unsafe or illegitimate.
